Steel Closed Back & Open Back Shelving and its Uses

Steel is extensively used in the field of commercial shelving and you can convert walls and the high space above the floor into valuable storage shelving. When space is consolidated the necessity to move to bigger, more expensive premises is avoided and employee efficiency increases. Inventory accounting is easier and the problem of over-buying and lost items disappears.

Steel commercial shelving is made of commercial grade steel of the highest grade and can withstand sudden climate change and extreme temperatures. This is vital as the storage shelving is exposed to the air outside whenever the warehouse doors are open. Steel commercial shelving is used in storage rooms, office shelving, warehouses, factories and in the retail sector.

Open back commercial shelving doesn't have a back and this gives easy access to stored items from either side of the unit. These storage shelving units have a steel frame and this supports the shelves. The gauge of steel used to construct the shelving dictates the strength a particular unit will be able to support. Boxes and crates that have to be ready for quick access are usually stored on open back shelving made from industrial strength steel gauge. Open back commercial and industrial shelving is a very good saver of horizontal space as the units are usually taller than their width. In offices smaller metal shelving units are used to store stationery and heavy boxes of documents.

Closed back steel storage shelves are enclosed at the sides and back by plates that are also made of steel. When security is an issue the shelves can be closed and locked, otherwise they are usually open and fixed along the length of a wall. This type of commercial shelving offers the same type of stable design as a cabinet, but steel shelving has a higher resistance to wear and damage. Closed back steel shelving is sometimes folded together to protect delicate materials like certain types of paint and chemicals. Overall, steel storage can support a much higher weight load than other types of commercial shelving.

Long span commercial shelving is a very useful way of making the full length of the walls of warehouses and factories into valuable storage shelving. Wide span is made from 24 gauge steel and can carry weights of up to 35,000lbs. The storage shelving is supported by beams in a design that raises the center of gravity of the unit so it can support very heavy weight loading without being unstable for loading and unloading. Wide span steel shelving is often used in tire and lubrication service areas and stores for auto parts. Ironmonger stores use smaller versions of steel shelving to store and display products, product literature and manuals.

Both closed back and open back shelving are micro-coated with iron phosphate and painted with baked-on enamel. This stops corrosion and provides a barrier which protects the steel from accidental damage. Steel shelving can be turned into industrial shelving by bolting the bottom end of one unit to the top end of another, using adjustable clips. This adaptation is known as 'box shelving' and it's often used to construct industrial shelving which can support as much as 2,000 lbs in weight.

Steel shelving is a strong and durable method of reclaiming unused space in commercial premises and is also sometimes used as garage shelving owing to its many useful features.
